Vipers work together to beat gallant Portico

After a midweek cancellation by Chester it looked as though the Vipers would have a weekend off, thankfully up stepped Portico to provide the opposition on a windy Sunday morning in St Helens.

The Vipers started well and kept Portico scoreless in the first quarter whilst posting three of their own. Mr reliable with the ball in hand Joe Harding, stepped up to open the the scoring shortly followed by the speedy Luke Taylor. Try of the quarter went to captain for the day Ben Haughton, taking the ball on half way Haughton delivered a devastating turn of pace to accompany a left foot step to go the distance and complete the quarter.

The next quarter saw Portico register their first try of the game but as Henry Briscoe dived over to get on the scoresheet, the Vipers were growing in confidence and slick handling from Ireland allowed Harding to add another before he himself got in on the act. The Vipers were passing the ball around and causing Portico problems with every attack now and as Harding delivered a beautiful ball to Ireland, the former stayed alive in support to get the return ball and outpace the opposition to land his Hat-trick.

Man of the Match Tyler Mills rampaged the length of the field to score a superb try with players closing in a tense 3rd quarter, the 6 year old took the ball on his own line and burst through the defensive line to gallop away.
Portico responded with 2 tries of their own but as the consistent Alex Dowd crashed over from short distance the quarter ended 2-2.

The 4th quarter saw the Vipers step up the defence and as in the first the opposition were kept scoreless, the tries flowed for the blue and yellows as Jacob Allcock, Jaden Penny and Top Tackler Bobby Hill added to the scoreline.

With 10 of the 11 Vipers managing to cross the line all efforts were made for Harvey Holt to add to the tally but time ran out to complete the full house.

A very good team performance from the boys and everyone played their part. The most pleasing aspects being the tries scored on the back of several passes and the team spirit they are developing.

Yours
One Happy Coach
