A huge wave of pride and celebration surrounds Crosfields today!
Tara’s journey began on the pitches of Crosfields Rugby League Club, where she played as a junior in a mixed team. Showing determination and talent from an early age, she continued her development until the age of 12, when she transitioned into the girls’ game. But Tara’s passion for rugby league didn’t stop at playing—she took up refereeing at a young age, setting the foundation for what would become a groundbreaking career.
As a player, Tara proudly represented St Helens Women, but it is in officiating that she has truly rewritten the history books. Her list of achievements is nothing short of remarkable: she became the first woman to score a try at Wembley, the first female full-time referee, the first woman to referee a men’s Championship match, and the first female touch judge in the professional game.
And she’s not finished yet.
This weekend marks another historic milestone, as Tara becomes the first female referee in charge of a men’s Super League fixture, taking centre stage for the clash between Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants. It’s a moment that reflects not only her exceptional ability, but also the progress of the sport she continues to inspire.
Despite her professional success, Tara remains deeply committed to her roots. She continues to give back to Crosfields, now coaching the U7s—passing on her knowledge, passion, and experience to the next generation, including her nephew who plays for the U7’s. It’s a testament to her character that, alongside breaking barriers on the national stage, she still finds time to nurture grassroots rugby.
Everyone at Crosfields Rugby League Club sends their heartfelt congratulations to Tara Jones on this incredible achievement. Your journey is an inspiration to so many, and your dedication to the game and your community makes us all immensely proud.
